Investigators say scammers continue using VIN cloning, VIN swapping, and odometer fraud to disguise stolen vehicles and make them appear legitimate. Officials recommend checking the VIN through a vehicle history report and the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s free VINCheck service before making a purchase. Buyers are also encouraged to meet sellers at a county tax office or request a VIN verification through law enforcement. Authorities say most sellers are honest, but a few extra steps can help protect consumers from costly scams. Investigators warn that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
