Governor Greg Abbott’s office is threatening to cut public safety funding from Houston, Dallas, and Austin over immigration-related policing policies. The state says the cities limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement in violation of state law. Houston could lose more than $110 million, Dallas over $80 million, and Austin about $2.5 million. City leaders argue their policies comply with the law and protect constitutional rights. Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed lawsuits and opened investigations into the policies. A special election date has not yet been announced.
