With schools across the Concho Valley resuming for the 2025-2026 school year, many parents and guardians will make back-to-school social media posts about their students. However, the San Angelo Police Department is advising people to be cautious when sharing certain details online. SAPD says that information published on the internet is often difficult, if not impossible to remove, meaning that details regarding a student — including things such as their full name, interests and location of their school — should be considered carefully before being included in a back-to-school social media post. Many organizations recommend omitting specific details regarding students from back-to-school social media posts to protect them from potential dangers.
The Child Rescue Coalition, a nonprofit organization made to provide law enforcement with technology to prevent child sexual abuse, suggests not sharing the name of a child’s school, the name of their teacher, logos of their school, or indicators of what their favorite things are. The Better Business Bureau recommends not sharing a child’s personal details in posts, choosing a generic background for photos instead of one featuring identifiable locations and double-checking your privacy settings before making a back-to-school post, among other safety measures.
