Major changes are coming for Texans who rely on SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps. Starting April 1, recipients will no longer be able to use Lone Star Cards to buy candy or sweetened drinks, including sodas and beverages with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Candy bars, gum, and some coated snacks are also restricted. Staple groceries like meat, produce, dairy, and bread remain eligible. State officials say the changes are designed to encourage healthier eating habits and were approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. More than three million Texans are expected to be affected.
