The San Angelo Police Department is urging citizens to remain vigilant of scammers after being made aware of a scam disguised as an attempt to register targets as voters for an upcoming election. In a public statement issued during the evening of Oct. 13, the SAPD said it was recently made aware of a “new text message scam circulating in our area.” The department stated that the malicious text may be structured as follows: “ROBERT, URGENT you must register to vote in the upcoming election. Public records say you’re not registered at [your address]. This is TX Republican Engagement; may we send you a registration form? Reply YES for a form, or WRONG STREET.” The SAPD said these texts “are not official communications from any government or election office” and that citizens should not reply to such messages or follow any links that may be included in them. “Scammers use them to collect personal information such as your name, address, or other identifying details,” the SAPD said. Those wishing to check the status of their voter registration or seeking to register to vote can do so by visiting votetexas.gov.
